The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) was established by Act 27 of 2005 of the Kerala State Legislature. By the same Act, the National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) established by the Bar Council of Kerala Trust in 2002 merged with the NUALS. In 2008, an amendment streamlined the powers and functions of the authorities of the University and ensured the active involvement of the Government of Kerala.The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission under section 2(f) of the UGC Act.It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).The main objects of the University are: (a) to advance and disseminate learning and knowledge of law and legal and judicial processes, professional legal education and their role in national development; (b) to develop in the student and research scholar a sense of responsibility to serve society by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, law reforms etc; and (c) to promote legal and judicial reforms as are needed to strengthen administration of justice in India. The Chief Justice of India is the Visitor and the Chief Justice of Kerala, the Chancellor of NUALS.The NUALS Campus is situated in a 10 acre plot at kinfra Hi-Tech Park at Kalamassery, Kochi, the industrial capital of Kerala and the seat of the Kerala high court. At present the Academic Block, Hostels for Boys and Girls, Amenities Centre and Faculty Apartments are operational. The construction of the Administrative Block and library Block, with assistance from the UGC and State Goverment, is in progress. The NUALS campus provides adequate academic infrastructure - dedicated internet access, Wi-Fi Connectivity, on-line legal resources including Heinonline, Westlaw India and Manupatra, a computer lab, besides a good collection of standard books and reports, both foreign and indian.

NUALSEligibility Criteria

NAULS Entrance Examination Eligibility Criteria - 2014 The candidate for CLAT shall have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate examination (10+2) or an examination recognized as equivalent thereto with at least 45 % marks b) Exemption upto 5% from the requirement of the minimum of 45% for the qualifying examination is given to the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST), Persons with Disability (PWD) and candidate’s beloigning to Backward and Other Backward Classes/Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (declared eligible for reservation in the State of Kerala) These categories are allowed to apply for CLAT if they do have not less than 40 % marks obtained in the qualifying examination The candidate shall not have completed 20 years of age as on 1st July, 2014. Reservation of Seats in NUALS  Entrance Examination – 2014 : The seats shall be apportioned as follows: All India Merit: 51%; NUALS Seats 33 State Merit (Kerala): 10%; NUALS Seats 06 Scheduled Castes: 8%; NUALS Seats 05 Scheduled Tribes: 2%; NUALS Seat 01 Backward and Other Backward Classes: 26%; NUALS Seats 17 Persons with Disability: 3%; NUALS Seats 02 Total: 100%; NUALS: 64 seats In addition to the above 64 seats, 12 seats are reserved as Supernumerary Quota for NRI candidates and 4 seats for Foreign Nationals The candidates in these categories need not appear for CLAT and they can directly apply to the University in the prescribed format provided in the website If any seats remain vacant in the NRI/Foreign Nationals quota the same will be filled from the CLAT 2014 rank list.
